The Education System of India

The present day education system of India represents a great paradox. There are some educational institutions like IITs and IIMs, which have ranked as the best institutions in the World. On the other hand, there are a number of schools in the country, which do not have the basic infrastructure. With the blast of the dotcom bubble and with the aim to reach at the goal of universal literacy, the education system of India has been developing in a high speed. Even after more than 50 years of independence, we have not reached to that point. But still there is a lot of hope.

The Government of India has been implementing a lot of education policies like DPEP to develop the education system of the country and bring it to the international standard. But still, it has not reached to that level. The medium of instruction in most of the states is their regional language. They have not introduced their medium of instruction in English in the state syllabus. The private institutes, where the medium of instruction is in English, are becoming commercialized and asking for a good amount of school fees, which the poor parents of India cannot afford. After spending so much of money on the development of education system, around 35% of the Indian population is still illiterate. The rural schools are still following the traditional way of teaching. Most of the students of the rural India have not seen a computer in their school. They do not have the basic infrastructure in their school. After completing their schooling in their village schools, when they are coming to the towns for their higher education, they are unable to compete with the urban students and getting frustrated. The schools in urban areas have been showing a good progress in the education system starting from the primary stage.

The higher education system has shown a good progress these days. With the introduction of eLearning in the higher education system, a few institutes like IITS and IIMs have been ranked as the best institutions in the world. Though the IT service sector is growing at a faster rate, the same speed is not replicated in the eLearning application. The main problem is with the preparation of eLearning content and infrastructure. Some institutions are joining the race to reach at the universal level, while the rest suffer from lack of knowledge or from lack of realization of the importance of eLearning. If the education system is well planned, the students from every nook and corner of the country can reach at that level in the near future. The way the urban population is showing interest in the eLearning system, if the same has been developed in the rural India from the primary stage, the future of India is going to be very bright. Let us hope for a better and bright future.
